Green Cleaning Recipes

Help the planet and get a squeaky-clean home with these easy (and inexpensive) formulas for eco-friendly cleaning.

Just a quick note tonight. I'm very tired, but still I found this interesting article and I plan to put it to good use very soon.

The Basic Ingredients

Baking Soda
This works best on proteins, grease, and animal messes. Because it's slightly abrasive, it can be used for scouring -- and, of course, it's a natural deodorizer.

Distilled White Vinegar
This mild acid works on alkaline substances, dissolving scale, inhibiting mold, and cutting soap scum. It's terrific for stains such as coffee, rust, and tea.

Simple Soap
Try castile soap, made with olive oil, or a vegetable-based soap. Both attach to soil at the molecular level, so you can rinse dirt away with water.

The Recipes (from top to bottom)
Soft Scrub
Add enough soap to 1/8 cup baking soda to make a creamy mixture. Apply with sponge to clean; rinse the surface well. Use and discard.

Appliance Cleaner
Dry baking soda shines up small appliances and even removes bread wrappers burned onto the toaster. Try rubbing a teaspoon onto your grubby blender or food processor with a clean flannel cloth.

Toilet Cleaner/Deodorizer
Sprinkle toilet bowl with 1/4 cup baking soda. Drizzle with 1/4 cup vinegar, then scour with a toilet brush.

Oven Cleaner
Sprinkle oven with 1/2 cup baking soda (more if needed) and spray with water. Let sit for several hours or overnight before scraping up stains and spills. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Hardwood Floor Cleaner
In a pail or bucket, mix 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar in one gallon warm water. Mop wood or linoleum floors, then rinse with water, making sure not to leave large pools to dry.

Led Zeppelin reunite for a gig.

I feel very tired, both physically and emotionally. So here is a post I got from Yahoo about one of my favourite groups.

Led Zeppelin announce one-off reunion gig
ITN - Wednesday, September 12 04:38 pm

Led Zeppelin have announced plans for a reunion gig
in memory of "a giant of music".

The band will perform for the first time in 19 years in tribute to the late founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the band in 1968.

It comes after singer Robert Plant confirmed that the rumours about the band's comeback were true, but he explained it'd be for one night only.

The show at the O2 Arena in London will take place on November 26. Tickets, which are limited to two per person, will cost £125 and are available by ballot only.

The group's three original members, singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones, will perform with late drummer John Bonham's son, Jason, on drums.

The Who's Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, rock band Foreigner and Scottish 20-year-old star Paolo Nutini, will also play on the tribute night.

Plant said: "During the Zeppelin years, Ahmet Ertegun was a major foundation of solidarity and accord.

"For us he was Atlantic Records and remained a close friend and conspirator - this performance stands alone as our tribute to the work and the life of our long-standing friend."

Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones split after drummer John Bonham died in 1980.

Since then, they have performed only a handful of gigs, including Live Aid in 1985 and an Atlantic Records anniversary gig three years later.

Lost ... and found

Quite some time ago I happened to 'meet' someone on the world wide web. What I didn't know at the time was that this person would become a great friend. We wrote long e-mails to each other and eventually met. It was pure platonic friendship.

As is often the case, personal and professional duties got in the way and we grew apart.

Some things we lose in life can be replaced, mostly if they happen to be material. Still, some material things carry with them deep meaning and remembrance of the occasion they had been given to us and of the person making the donation. When something is lost it makes us take care of the things that are left, hopefully never to be lost.

Some other situations are completely gone with the wind never to be retrieved again. All that is left is regret and in some cases a deep sense of solitude. This occurs with the loss of a dear friend or a person that meant a lot. It also happens when we lose temporary mobility through injury, sometimes taking for granted all the precious gifts that we have.

Occasionally there is a ray of light peeping through the greyness of heavy clouds, and what was taken away returns. I found the friend I lost contact with years ago. Yes, you guess right. Friendship was found again on the world wide web. I still cannot believe I struck gold. We are communicating again through long e-mails and looking forward to meet again, a though we never grew apart.

That is the meaning of true friendship. Whatever has happened, we're on our feet again and there is no more loneliness.
